What to expect when you see an

Osteopath

Osteopathy
  • The history of your complaint as well as a full medical history will be taken.
  • You will normally be asked to undress to your underwear. It is important to us that you feel at ease during treatment and some patients feel more comfortable in thin, lightweight clothing so that you may still be examined appropriately for us to make a diagnosis.
  • Your posture and movements will often be examined, as well as the area of complaint.
  • Other tests such as reflexes or blood pressure may be necessary to assist the diagnosis.
  • Your Osteopath will need to palpate (feel) the area of complaint and quite often other areas relating to your problem.
  • You will be given a diagnosis and a prognosis (outlook) and if your problem is suitable for osteopathic treatment, we will explain what this will involve. If you are happy we will continue with the treatment.
  • If treatment is not appropriate and we feel that we cannot help, we will advise you as to your next course of action. This might be a referral to your GP, you may need to see a Consultant or perhaps you may need an MRI scan or other tests.
